Brief History of Farm Tractors

emastsml Brief History of Farm Tractors

The word tractor actually comes from the Latin word trahere, which means to pull, so it is logical enough for it to get a word tractor. This word was first used with its present meaning in the year 1901, though before this date those traction engines, which are still visible in ancient country fairs were around us already. These were transformed for the use of agriculture in 1850, these were developed by following small steam engines that helped drive farm machinery since the beginning of nineteenth century.

The first tractor with gasoline power and with practical purpose was constructed in 1892 in Iowa by Joan Froelich but he could only sell two of them. In the beginning of 1900, in Iowa, Hart-Parr Company also created and constructed a tractor for using on farms to help with planting, disking, harrowing, planting and plowing. There were initial designs by Hornsby Ackroyd in Britainin 1897 and another version with three wheels by Dan Albone in 1902 but the first commercially completed came in 1908 from Saundersons of Bedford. The Twin City Traction Engine company introduced a successful tractors powered by gasoline in USA in 1911.

Henry Ford first introduced the first completely mass produced tractor in 1971, the Fordson, during that time it was very small and available for affordable prices and so the American market started to develop actually. Tractors started to make a crucial influence on the British farming and the reason for this is First World War, when there was  a demand to increase the production of food.

The John Deere Company, in 1978, whose increasing deer trademark has been popular for 120 years introduced Waterloo Boy Tractors. By 1923, Fordson was being also manufactured in Ireland,Russia, England and USA as well, it had about 77% of the American market and good hold overseas. Tractors which were gasoline powered internal combustion engines during 1920s were becoming approved everywhere. Affordable manufacturing techniques and pattern enhancements resulted in tractors becoming important requirements for farmers.
